TEN of Tennessee’s top filmmakers will compete in this timed filmmaking challenge as a part of the 2018 Knox FILM FEST. Each filmmaker will have 90 days to write, shoot and edit a narrative short film.

To enter, filmmakers must apply to be accepted by completing an application and submitting a sample of a short narrative film that they have made in the past. A panel of industry experts will narrow the field and choose the Top 10 filmmakers to compete in the challenge.  The 10 selected filmmakers will be required to pay an entry fee of $50 upon selection.

A Kick-off event will be held on March 31, 2018 where the selected filmmakers will receive instructions for the challenge.  The films will be due no later than June 30, 2018.

All films must not be shorter than 12 minutes or longer than 20 minutes.

All competitors must be legal residents of Tennessee.

The 10 films will be screened at the 2018 Knox Film Fest, which will be held September 14-15 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where they will compete against each other and in the general short film competition.

During the awards ceremony, at the close of the KFF, the TN10 top 3 finalists will be revealed and one filmmaker will be named the Best of the Best! 

All accepted filmmakers must agree to allow their TN10 film to be included on a compilation DVD, which will be sold to support the efforts of the Knoxville Film Festival.

OVERVIEW: The Knox Film Fest TN10 Best of the Best Filmmaking Challenge is a film competition whereby filmmakers have 90-days to create a short film. The TN10 will be held April 1 - June 30, 2018, in conjunction with the 2018 Knox Film Fest, to be held September 14-15, 2018, at Regal Downtown West Cinema 8 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

ELIGIBILITY: The TN10 is open to legal residents of TENNESSEE.

TO ENTER: Filmmakers must complete an application form and agree to the terms, conditions and rules of the TN10. All submitted sample films will be screened by a panel of judges and the top 10 filmmakers will be invited to participate in the 2018 TN10 Best of the Best Filmmaking Challenge.

REGISTRATION FEE: Once a filmmaker is accepted, a registration fee of $50 is required to be paid prior to the TN10 competition period. Each accepted filmmaker will receive 2 FULL FESTIVAL Passes to the 2018 Knox Film Fest.

APPLICATION PERIOD: Registration is now open and will close at midnight on February 28, 2018.

COSTS: All costs associated with the production of the Entry are solely the responsibility of the Entrant.

PARTICIPATION: Accepted filmmakers must be present (either in person, online or on the phone) at the Kick-off Event to participate. Local filmmakers must be present in person. Non-local filmmakers may choose to be present in person, online or on the phone.

COMPETITION PERIOD: At the Kick-Off Event, accepted filmmakers may be given a film theme along with elements to include in their film.. The film must be no shorter than 12 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes. Accepted filmmakers will be notified of the time and location of the kick-off event.

DEADLINES: The deadline for submission of your film, as stated in the above section, is a hard deadline. No films will be accepted or allowed any revisions after the submission deadline. NO EXCEPTIONS.


Your Digital Film File Specifications:

  • 24 frames per second
  • 1920×1080 (file must be native 16×9)
  • HD QUICKTIME FILE (Apple ProRes HQ is recommended)
  • Audio should be 48khz stereo.

Your finished film is to be submitted as per the specifications above. Your film should not be shorter than 12 minutes and not longer than 20 minutes. This includes credits. Please DO put a slate at the beginning of your film that contains: Name of Film, Name of Team, Name of Team Leader, Total Running Time. Slate should be 10 seconds long with 5 seconds of black between slate and first frame of film.

You may deliver your film on a Thumb Drive, Hard Drive, Data DVD (no Blu-Ray) or Downloadable Online Link. Upon delivery, we will check to make sure all deliverables are on your drive.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: All submitted films must meet high technical standards as determined by Knox Film Fest management. Films that have significant technical issues (bad audio, audio out of sync, etc.) may be disqualified from competition and not screened at the film festival. Team leaders are strongly urged to make sure that the technical aspect of their film is of the highest quality possible.

SCREENING OF TN10 FILMS: All eligible entries will be screened during the 2018 Knox Film Fest.

SELECTION OF WINNERS: Entries will be judged by a process in which a qualified panel of judges will evaluate each eligible Entry based on the following judging criteria: The Top Entry will be declared the winner. Entrants agree that Knox Film Fest management has the sole right to decide all matters and disputes arising from this Project and that all decisions of the Shootout management are final and binding.

WINNERS/AWARDS: Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony to be held at the Knox Film Fest.

TERMS OF SUBMISSION: By submitting an Entry into this Project, Entrant hereby warrants and represents that Entrant owns and/or controls all rights to the Entry he/she is entering in this Project, including, without limitation, the content of all video or digital recording, including but not limited to the performances contained in each Entry, with the exception of any assets provided by the Knox Film Fest for use by Entrant in connection with this Project. Entrant further warrants and represents that the Entrant has obtained permission from each person or other entity appearing in the Entry to grant the rights to the Knox Film Fest Management set forth in these Official Rules, and, upon request, will submit copies of such permissions to the Project Parties. By submitting an Entry, Entrant hereby acknowledges receipt of the Official Rules and accepts all of the Terms of Submission and other provisions contained therein, and further agrees to indemnify and hold the Knox Film Fest Management (The Knox Film Fest, Secret City Films and their respective officers, agents, volunteers, sponsors and representatives) and affiliated organizations harmless from any and all claims, damages, expenses, costs (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) and liabilities (including settlements), brought or asserted by any third party against Knox Film Fest Management due to or arising out of the Entrant’s Entry content and materials in this Project, or the Entrant’s conduct during and in connection with this Project, including but not limited to claims for infringement of trademark, copyright, or other intellectual property rights, right of publicity, right of privacy or defamation. Entrant further hereby agrees to release, indemnify and hold harmless Knox Film Fest Management from any and all claims of infringement or prohibited use arising from advertising, presentation, web content or any other public exposure of content and material subsequently produced, presented, and/or prepared by or on behalf of the Knox Film Fest based upon Entrant’s work or the content and material contained in any Entry.

Each Entrant grants the Knox Film Fest and its officers, agents, and affiliated organizations a non-exclusive right and license without fee or payment, to post online and/or screen the Entrant’s film in a public setting for a period of one calendar year after the close of the 2018 Knox Film Fest. In addition each filmmaker grants Knox Film Fest the right to produce and sell both Standard DVDs and Blu-Ray DVDs of a compilation of all 10 films. All proceeds of any paid admission or other revenue derived from any such use or screening shall be retained 100% by the Knox Film Fest in support of its mission.

Knox Film Fest Management reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any entry for any reason prior to the 2018 Knox Film Fest and/or rescind, withdraw and/or revoke any awards, prizes or designations a film may have received as a result of entering the TN10.

LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY AND RELEASE: By participating in the TN10 Project, Entrant hereby agrees to release, indemnify and hold Knox Film Fest Management and its officers, agents, and affiliated organizations harmless from any and all claims, whether made by Entrant for disqualification, or whether made by any third party, for damages or liabilities arising from or relating to Entrant’s participation in the Project.
