2017 Knoxville Film Festival 7-Day Shootout
Terms & Conditions
OVERVIEW: The Knoxville Film Festival 7-Day Shootout is a film competition whereby filmmakers have 7-days to create a short film. The Shootout will be held August 23 – August 30, 2017, in conjunction with the 2017 Knoxville Film Festival, to be held September 15-17, 2017, at Regal Downtown West Cinema 8 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
ELIGIBILITY: The Shootout is open to legal residents of the United States.
TO ENTER: Participants must complete a registration form and agree to the terms, conditions and rules of the Shootout.
REGISTRATION FEE: Registration fee is $80 per team. Each team will receive 2 FULL FESTIVAL Passes to the 2017 Knoxville Film Festival.
REGISTRATION PERIOD: Registration is now open and will close at midnight on August 22, 2017, or until 30 teams have registered. Registrants must complete the online registration and pay the entry fee. To register, click here.
COSTS: All costs associated with the production of the Entry are solely the responsibility of the Entrant.
PARTICIPATION: Team Leaders must be present (either in person, online or on the phone) at the Kick-off Event to participate. Local team leaders must be present in person. Non-local team leaders may choose to be present in person, online or on the phone.
COMPETITION PERIOD: At the Kick-Off Event, Entrants will be randomly given a film genre along with 3 elements to include in their film and will have exactly 7 days to make a film/video. The film must be no shorter than 4 minutes and no longer than 7 minutes. The Kick-Off Event will be held August 23, 2017 from 6-8 pm at a location TO BE DETERMINED. All films must be submitted between 6 and 8 pm on August 30, 2017, at a location TO BE DETERMINED.
DEADLINES: The deadline for submission of your film, as stated in the above section, is a hard deadline. No films will be accepted or allowed any revisions after the submission deadline. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Your Digital Film File Specifications:
- 24 frames per second
- 1920×1080 (file must be native 16×9)
- HD QUICKTIME FILE (Apple ProRes HQ is recommended)
- Audio should be 48khz stereo.
Your finished film is to be submitted as per the specifications above. Your film should not be shorter than 4 minutes and not longer than 7 minutes. This includes credits. Please DO put a slate at the beginning of your film that contains: Name of Film, Name of Team, Name of Team Leader, Total Running Time. Slate should be 10 seconds long with 5 seconds of black between slate and first frame of film.

You may deliver your film on a Thumb Drive, Hard Drive, Data DVD (no Blu-Ray) or Downloadable Online Link. Upon delivery, we will check to make sure all deliverables are on your drive.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: All submitted films must meet high technical standards as determined by Knoxville Film Festival management. Films that have significant technical issues (bad audio, audio out of sync, etc.) may be disqualified from competition and not screened at the film festival. Team leaders are strongly urged to make sure that the technical aspect of their film is of the highest quality possible.
SCREENING OF SHOOTOUT FILMS: All eligible entries will be screened during the 2017 Knoxville Film Festival.
TEAM LEADER: If any group of individuals elects to collaborate on an Entry, they are required to designate one (1) person as the agent of the group to enter the Project, agree to these Official Rules and accept the prize on behalf of the group. The Shootout management is not liable for any disputes between collaborators arising out of or related to the Project.
SELECTION OF WINNERS: Entries will be judged by a process in which a qualified panel of judges will evaluate each eligible Entry based on the following judging criteria:
- Creativity (40%)
- Technical Merit (40%)
- Adherence to the Assignment (20%)
The Top Entry will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken based on the highest score in the first Judging Criteria, continuing thereafter to each Judging Criteria in order, as needed to break the tie. Entrants agree that Shootout management has the sole right to decide all matters and disputes arising from this Project and that all decisions of the Shootout management are final and binding.
WINNERS/AWARDS: Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony to be held at the Knoxville Film Festival. A variety of awards and prizes will be presented to various winners of the Shootout.
Following is a list of awards to be presented for the Shootout competition. Other awards may be included at the prerogative of the jurors and/or KFF management. The awards are: Best Film, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, Audience Favorite, Best Director, Best Story, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Use of Visual Element, Best Use of Music or Special Effects, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role
TERMS OF SUBMISSION: By submitting an Entry into this Project, Entrant hereby warrants and represents that Entrant owns and/or controls all rights to the Entry he/she is entering in this Project, including, without limitation, the content of all video or digital recording, including but not limited to the performances contained in each Entry, with the exception of any assets provided by the Shootout for use by Entrant in connection with this Project. Entrant further warrants and represents that the Entrant has obtained permission from each person or other entity appearing in the Entry to grant the rights to the Shootout Management set forth in these Official Rules, and, upon request, will submit copies of such permissions to the Project Parties. By submitting an Entry, Entrant hereby acknowledges receipt of the Official Rules and accepts all of the Terms of Submission and other provisions contained therein, and further agrees to indemnify and hold the Shootout Management (The Knoxville Film Festival, Secret City Films and their respective officers, agents, volunteers, sponsors and representatives) and affiliated organizations harmless from any and all claims, damages, expenses, costs (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) and liabilities (including settlements), brought or asserted by any third party against Shootout Management due to or arising out of the Entrant’s Entry content and materials in this Project, or the Entrant’s conduct during and in connection with this Project, including but not limited to claims for infringement of trademark, copyright, or other intellectual property rights, right of publicity, right of privacy or defamation. Entrant further hereby agrees to release, indemnify and hold harmless Shootout Management from any and all claims of infringement or prohibited use arising from advertising, presentation, web content or any other public exposure of content and material subsequently produced, presented, and/or prepared by or on behalf of the Shootout based upon Entrant’s work or the content and material contained in any Entry.
Each Entrant grants the Knoxville Film Festival and its officers, agents, and affiliated organizations a non-exclusive right and license without fee or payment, to post online and/or screen the Entrant’s film in a public setting for a period of one calendar year after the close of the 2017 Knoxville Film Festival. All proceeds of any paid admission or other revenue derived from any such use or screening shall be retained 100% by the Knoxville Film Festival in support of its not for profit mission.
Shootout Management reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any entry for any reason prior to the 2017 Knoxville Film Festival and/or rescind, withdraw and/or revoke any awards, prizes or designations a film may have received as a result of entering the 7-Day Shootout.
LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY AND RELEASE: By participating in the Shootout Project, Entrant hereby agrees to release, indemnify and hold Shootout Management and its officers, agents, and affiliated organizations harmless from any and all claims, whether made by Entrant for disqualification, or whether made by any third party, for damages or liabilities arising from or relating to Entrant’s participation in the Project.
